Hurricane Preparedness 2021: Are you ready?

Updated: Aug 7, 2021

Predictions

It is hard to believe the 2021 Hurricane Season is already upon us! NOAA is predicting, (with 70% confidence) an active season (though, not as busy as 2020); with a likely range of 13-20 named storms, of which 6-10 could become hurricanes (Winds 74+ MPH), including 3-5 major hurricanes (Cat. 3- 5; Winds 111+ MPH).

Athena Masson of Florida Public Radio Emergency Network stated, “anything can happen; it’s been six consecutive highly active seasons. And active or not, we need to be prepared for what is to come and treat every day as if hurricane season is ongoing. Prepare now; that’s all I can tell you – because hurricane season is here.” The Atlantic Hurricane Season 1st to November 30th. With that said, it only takes ONE major storm to devastate an entire community. Last year’s record-breaking season serves as a reminder to everyone to be prepared BEFORE you are under a severe weather watch or warning. Prepare your yard for hurricane season; it is a necessity when you live in Florida.

Years can pass between the worst storms, but it is important to prepare your yard and home for this inevitable event. In hurricane preparedness, trees have a different consideration than other parts of your yard. In fact, proper planning can actually help protect your home. The right kinds of trees and shrubs can create windbreaks and protect your home from flying debris. Many fallen and damaged trees are often a result of improper pruning, and it is important to have your trees serviced by an educated, experienced, licensed, and insured professional. Z’s Bobcat & Tree Service, LLC, is a team of fully-certified professionals who tackle everything from complex projects to simple operations.

What to look for when hiring a Tree Service Company

There are many different companies out there offering tree services. That’s why it’s so important to know who you’re hiring to avoid potential problems. Here are a few things to look for when hiring a tree company:

· License

· Insurance

· Education and Experience

· Referrals

· Credentials

· Estimates

· Employee training and experience

· Equipment

· Time

Getting Storm Ready: Tree and Property Services

With over 12 years of experience, Z’s Bobcat & Tree Services, LLC., offers a wide range of top quality, professional tree services. Allow us to provide you with a peace of mind that your treescape will be 100% storm ready should a storm head your way. It is important to never begin any type of tree pruning during a hurricane or tropical storm watch or warning. Zach and his team offer the following storm-readiness services:

· Clear trees of all dead wood. Dead wood invites pests and easily breaks away into projectiles during a storm.

· Ensure the canopy is preserved by not over trimming, taking no more than 25% of its normal growth.

· Avoid cutting into the root system unless there is a conflict between the roots and the structure. We will assess the situation and come up with a plan that preserves the health of the tree and the safety of your home or structure

· Ensure proper disposal of cut wood by removing all debris from trimming and pruning. Loose branches and logs have the potential to become projectiles during severe storms and cause an extensive amount of easily preventable damage.

· Grind all stumps below grade. Stumps above grade pose a tripping hazard, regardless of the season!

· Land clearing services to remove excessive brush growth and large trash items that may be lying around the property.

More Preparedness Tips:

Despite the preparedness hype at the start of each hurricane season, a recent survey by Cummins* found most people (75%) still wished they had been more prepared for the storm, and 66% wished they had back-up power for their home. As a result, survey respondents endured significant inconveniences and financial setback.

Pay attention to emergency information and alerts, and stay informed! Have multiple ways to receive emergency alerts. If you live in a mandatory evacuation zone and local officials tell you to evacuate, do so immediately! Know your evacuation routes ahead of time. Determine how to best protect yourself from high winds and flooding, and take refuge in a designated storm shelter or interior room for high winds.

· Prepare a disaster kit for each member of your household, including children and pets.

· If you, or anyone in your household, needs additional help during an emergency due to disabilities, have a plan set in place.

· Have a plan for backup power to ensure vital medical equipment and appliances like sump pumps stay on during a power outage.

· Identify if your home is in a low-lying area prone to flooding. Get flood insurance immediately if you do not already have this coverage.

· Make sure all important documents are in a waterproof, central location including ID’s, Insurance policies, SSC, BC’s, etc. Make copies and keep them in a password secured digital file.

· Charge all phones, computers, tablets, etc. Have back up power sources readily available.

· De-clutter drains and gutters, bring outside furniture inside.

· Gather supplies, including medications. Have at least 2 weeks available. Only stock up on what you need; non-perishable food, batteries, water, toilet paper, etc.
